It’s official: Rihanna has broken Michael Jackson’s record. With her 14th chart topper, RiRi now has more number one singles under her belt than the King of Pop and Madonna. Not to mention, she’s way hotter than them put together… which doesn’t hurt.
The song “Work” features Drake, and is part of her new album Anti, released just three weeks ago. On Friday, “Work” surged from #4 to #1 on the Hot 100 chart.
Here’s an updated look at the artists with the most Billboard Hot 100 #1 hits:
20, The Beatles
18, Mariah Carey
13, Michael Jackson
12, The Supremes
11, Whitney Houston
10, Janet Jackson
10, Stevie Wonder
Previously tied with the King of Pop, Rihanna now has 14 chart-toppers, compared to Jackson’s 13.
She is just behind Mariah Carey, who currently has 18 number ones, and The Beatles, who clocked up 20 in their time.
Meanwhile, “Work” became Drake’s second Billboard Hot 100 topper. Also collaborating with Rihanna, the duo’s “What’s My Name?” topped the Nov. 20, 2010 Hot 100 chart.
Even though Rihanna hasn’t particularly flaunted about taking Jackson’s spot on the all-time list, she did tweet on Monday afternoon, “#WORK tops Billboard #Hot100!! Navy you killed it this week!” “Navy,” of course,” refers to the nickname for Rihanna’s passionate fan base.
The news of Rihanna’s latest chart-topping success comes just hours after she and Drake released not one, but two videos for “Work.”
The first version had the stars getting down and dirty at a club (Rihanna in a rainbow bra and fishnet dress). The second depicted a sensual living room rendez-vous, and RiRi bra-less in a see-through shirt.
Did we mention it was Rihanna’s 28th birthday on Saturday? She clearly has a lot to celebrate.
