Nicola Griffin will make history this year as the oldest woman to appear in a bathing suit in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2016. The 56-year-old mother of two will appear in a swimsuit ad for the company Swimsuits For All, who last year made news featuring plus-sized model Ashley Graham.
“It’s not all about being 20 and 5’10”. We’re bored of that! We are all different ages and sizes and that’s the beauty of it. We’re real women.”
“People think you lose your sex appeal as you get older—but that’s a myth,” Griffin said in a statement. “I’ve never felt sexier.”
Take a look at Nicola in the photo (one of three full-page ads Swimsuits For All is Running) and tell me that you’re not impressed.
Good on her and good for Swimsuits For All.
Of course, if we’re getting technical Nicola isn’t really in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Yes, yes, she’s within the pages–but she’s not IN it. Furthermore, she’s not actually the oldest person to be in the SI Swimsuit Issue. That honor goes to Christie Brinkley who at the age of 64 appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Legends Issue. But Christie wasn’t wearing a swimsuit (although we’re guessing she’s more than capable of doing so) and Nicola is.
