MarShawn McCarrel, a well-respected Black Lives Matter activist only 23-years-old, shot and killed himself on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse on Monday evening. His last Facebook message, which you can read below was “My demons won today. I’m sorry.”

His last Tweet reads: “Let the record show that I pissed on the state house before I left.”
But before he did those two things, MarShawn was heavily involved in his community. The young man founded Pursuing Our Dreams (POD), a mentoring program that handed out lunches to Ohio’s homeless. He was also a recipient of Radio One’s Hometown Champions, an award for activists and volunteers.
MarShawn’s brother is a graduate of Ohio State University.
