The Memphis Tigers made their presence known to college football fans this season with a Heisman Trophy candidate in Paxton Lynch and a win over Ole Miss. The 9-3 Tigers will head south to Legion Field in Birmingham for the Birmingham Bowl as they will face another team from the SEC in the 6-6 Auburn Tigers on December 30. Don’t let the records of each team fool the average fan.
Memphis lost three straight games after starting 8-0 before bouncing back for a 63-0 win over SMU to end the regular season. Lynch has passed for 3,670 yards, 28 touchdowns and three interceptions for the season and is likely going to be a top-five pick in the NFL Draft if he decides to come out. Mose Frazier leads the team with 750 receiving yards on 66 catches and four touchdowns. Doroland Dorecus has 613 yards on the ground and eight touchdowns in the run game for Memphis, who would love to pull another upset to end their season and get to the elusive ten-win mark.
Auburn lost 29-13 to Alabama to end their season in falling to the .500 mark again. Jeremy Johnson has been the starter recently and has thrown for 1,043 yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions for the year. Ricardo Louis is leading the Tigers’ receivers in yards through the air with 699 on his 45 catches and three touchdowns. Peyton Barber has 976 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns and will get over the 1,000-yard mark during this game. The Tigers face a stiff test against a Memphis team that is averaging 42.7 points and 510.4 yards per game.
