Frank Beamer has had a long and storied career as the coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies. He will coach his final game on December 26 as the 6-6 Hokies face the 6-6 Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the Independence Bowl at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, LA. Can his team send him off into the sunset with a victory to get over the .500 mark for the season or will Beamer go home with a losing record in his final season?
Virginia Tech won 23-20 over Virginia in their final game to clinch a bowl berth. Michael Brewer has passed for a team-high 1,359 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions this season with Hokies quarterbacks looking the direction of Isaiah Ford a lot this year. Ford has 63 catches for 937 yards and ten touchdowns. Travon McMillian has rushed for 960 yards and five touchdowns to lead the running game. The Hokies average 29 points a game and depend a lot of that run game to be successful.
Tulsa broke a two-game losing streak with a 45-34 win over Tulane to end the regular season. Dane Evans has thrown for 3,958 yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year and has a yardage magnet with Keyarris Garrett. Garrett has 88 catches for 1,451 yards and seven touchdowns. D’Angelo Brewer has run well with 732 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the season. The Golden Hurricane average 502.8 yards per game and 35.9 points. Their offense is the thing that will carry them in this battle to finish 7-6.
