If you had to guess where the headline “Meth-Addicted Man Shot After Running Through Streets Naked With Machete” came from, you’d say with zero hesitation that it happened in Florida because… Florida. There are just some geographic locations we can count on for certain things.
And just as Florida is known for their citizens who will stop at no length to scare you, Dubai is known for spending stupid amounts of money on completely unnecessary stuff. Like the man made islands that look like the globe. Or the ATM that only dispenses gold bars.
But easily the craziest purchase we’ve seen from Dubai are the 20 jetpacks the country just put on order for their firefighters and first responders. On behalf of the Dubai Civil Defense, the emirate just signed a contract with Martin Aircraft Company to purchase 20 jetpacks and two training simulators.
Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, Martin Aircraft Company is a publicly listed company on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). You can watch their jetpacks in action in the video below:

We know that Dubai is full of enormous skyscrapers and the like, but what are the actual chances that they’ll ever use one of these? Our guess is pretty much zero and that they’re just spending absurd amount money to prove that they’re the jet pack capital of the world. Like, we get it, Dubai. You love oil, money, slave labor, and jetpacks. You don’t need to rub it in our faces from 1,000 feet above ground.
Although that being said, being stuck on the 150th floor of the Burj Khalifa in a fire would be absolutely terrifying. The better use of these jetpacks would just buy these and give them to people in the buildings so they can get the f*ck out of there.
