There appears to be a pattern developing around the NBA and that would be female assistant coaches. After the success of Becky Hammon with the Spurs last season, the Kings will make Nancy Lieberman an assistant coach next season as she told ESPN.com. Lieberman is arguably one of the greatest women to ever grace a basketball court and now she will get the chance to coach the guys again.
This is a step in the right direction. There are so many talented women out there who could take over teams that it is a shame that it took so long for this to happen. It will be a treat the first time the Kings and Spurs play each other this coming season. Maybe George Karl and Gregg Popovich can step aside for the day and let the ladies coach for the night.
It’s not like Lieberman hasn’t been here before. She coached in the D-League for three years from 2009-11. Who knows which former player will be next but there is an influx of talent coming into the NBA that would never have got the chance just a few years ago. It is just showing how the NBA can grow into a better place every single day.
