The New Black Eyed Peas song is called “Yesterday” and has a video of the original trio (that’s Will i Am, apl.de.ap and Taboo) combing through the crates while putting their faces on classic rap vinyl–because they really want to remind you that the pre-Fergie act was really inspired by classic rap like A Tribe Called Quest and classic, um…whimsy like De La Soul.
It’s all a celebration of the band’s 20th anniversary. That’s the convenient excuse for ditching Fergie, who wasn’t around in the early days. She was around, however, to help the band churn out plenty of crap. Is “Yesterday” taking us back enough to yesterday where we can forgive those crimes against music?
Well, yeah. The video concept isn’t exactly original. As noted, it’s more desperate–but it’s a nice track, right? We’d be more excited if the early tracks Wil and Apl recorded under the name of Atban Klann got a release. We don’t know if they’re ashamed of that work, or if Eazy-E’s estate still owns the recordings. “Yesterday” sure is the best think the trio has done in ages, though. Take a listen and try not to be hateful about the past….
