It’s the Ides of March–that being March 15th, as referenced in the classic play “Julius Caesar” by William Shakespeare, the date of the assassination of, you guessed it, Julius Caesar. In case you’re unfamiliar with the story, we’re here to give you a little breakdown of what happened all those years ago in Ancient Rome.
It’s 44 B.C and just a few months prior to the Ides of March, our boy Caesar had been named Dictator Perpetuo, basically dictator for life. The Roman Republic had granted Caesar emergency powers to help defend Rome when the barbarians were attacking and when he had defeated them, he took it upon himself to abandon the whole “republic” thing and permanently name himself dictator.
A lot of people didn’t like that, including Caesar’s friend Marcus Brutus, and Brutus would go on to lead a group of conspirators to murder Caesar in the middle of a theatre in Rome. This led to Shakespeare to write the now-infamous line “Et Tu Brute?” meaning “You too Brutus?” the ultimate sign of betrayal.
But anyway, that’s enough of a history lesson, the Ides of March is now when everyone makes some jokes about Caesar getting stabbed by all of his so-called friends (too soon?) Time + tragedy=comedy, you know, and we’re talking about over 2,000 years ago. It’s also a lot less irritating than Pi Day when everyone pretends to be mathematicians.

And don’t forget this other The Ides of March, who were the members of a band that managed a pretty cool single back in 1970 with “Vehicle.” The rest of the songs on their sole album weren’t that good, but songwriter and member Jim Peterik went on to form Survivor and wrote “Eye of the Tiger,” so that’s up there with Shakespeare…
