Throughout the month of October my beer reviews and recommendations have focused on typical fall and October seasonal beers, märzens and pumpkins. But today we depart from those with a craft beer perfect for your Halloween shenanigans– if and when you find yourself in the Walking Dead! This weekend 3 Floyds Brewing Company’s Zombie Dust pale ale is What’s on Tap!
Brewed in Indiana, 3 Floyds Brewing Company is arguably, beer for beer, one of the best American craft breweries to date. Their Dark Lord and Zombie Dust are two of their most sought after beers by craft beer enthusiasts. Upon pouring, Zombie Dust smells also like an imperial IPA; huge citrus (lemon, lime, maybe orange and grapefruit) and earthy, pine-ish, notes. The other dominating aromas are the hops and malt, but neither seem to be overpowering.
With each sip the malt and hop combination is front and center and on the backend the hoppy bitterness is both pungent and lasting. Given its hop presence, on the first sip, and smell, one would expect Zombie Dust to have a high ABV but surprisingly Zombie Dust’s 6.2% ABV is relatively moderate. There is all types of beer-goodness going on with this brew; from the earthy, citrusy aroma to the well balanced flavors of the hops and malt, and the long lasting bitterness, it is very easy to taste why Zombie Dust is a consistently well liked, and high rated brew.
Being that it is Halloween, I could recommend a spicy dish to go with this craft beer or even go the candy route but I will not! I recommend that you crack open a Zombie Dust and enjoy it before you go out for the night or even enjoy several throughout the night. So cheers to the zombie apocalypse, to girls tagging every costume idea with “naughty,” and to a great brew!
Cheers!
