There are simply some things that team mascots do that go over the line. The Jacksonville Jaguars mascot did exactly that on Sunday during the team’s game with the Pittsburgh Steelers. “Jaxson de Ville” held up a sign saying “Towels Carry Ebola.” That was clearly in response to the recent epidemic in Africa, and the confirmed cases in the United States–all while holding a Steelers’ “Terrible Towel.”
The image was quickly spread via Twitter. Ebola remains spread by contract with bodily fluids so even if the mascot is trying to use the sign to get more awareness out there, there is simply no reason for a mascot to be holding a sign like that. After the sign made its first appearance of people online, fans went nuts about the mascot having a sign like that along with the Terrible Towel.
Hopefully the team decides that the mascot needs a suspension for his action and while the man in the suit has been there for 18 years according to the team, it may be time for someone else. There are simply some things that aren’t to joke about and Jaxson de Ville here has crossed that line. Social media will be waiting on the next step from the team.
