Now that he has retired from baseball, Derek Jeter is off to different ventures. The first one is a new website for fans that will bring athletes’ “unfiltered” views without needing to go through reporters for the information. The Players’ Tribune is promising unique access to athletes that includes videos, photos, podcasts and more. Here’s how he sets it up on the introductory site page…
I am working with other athletes, with editors and with producers to create a platform that gives us a chance to say what’s on our minds. It’s called The Players’ Tribune. Over the next few months, we’ll be introducing a strong core of athlete editors and contributors who will shape the site into an online community filled with first-person stories and behind-the-scenes content.
This is supposed to allow fans to hear what athletes are really thinking instead of having reporters shoving microphones in their faces after games. There could be many issues with this from finding enough time for the athletes to sit down for interviews or the podcasts but it could be something that fans want to flock to.
Jeter has admitted in the past that he wasn’t the best with reporters. This might be a new way for for him–and others like him–to talk about the game in their own way. The biggest test will be how many people actually find the website right away and page views just like every single website worries about. Jeter has a tall hill to climb on that one.
