Rob Lowe & Creepy Rob Lowe Pitch For DirecTV, Win Internet [VIDEOS]

Superhumanly handsome and self-effacingly funny actor Rob Lowe not only defies the wear and tear of aging (he turned 50 this year), he remains a TV fixture no matter how many of his series bomb (The Lyons’ Den, Dr. Vegas) or how many shows he just seems to walk out on in the middle of their successful runs (The West Wing, Brothers and Sisters, Parks and Recreation). Now, Rob has reinvented his small-screen image anew with a pair of hilarious DirecTV commercials in which he socks it to cable by slumming as ugly and sleazy versions of… Rob Lowe.
“Hi, I’m Rob Lowe and I have DirecTV,” he says, looking clean-shaven and suit-clad dapper as usual in the immediate break-out ad. A second Lowe enters the frame, instantly repellant with his oiled-back hair, a Fu Manchu mustache, and an open motorcycle jacket. “I’m Super Creepy Rob Lowe,” he announces, grossly reaching over to rub the first one’s back, “and I have cable.”
The side-by-side comparison escalates from there. DirecTV makes you more like the real Rob Lowe, while cable has you watching strangers swim and then sniffing their hair. The commercial amusingly culminates with a few bars from the hyper-cheest 1985 instrumental hit, “Love Theme From St. Elmo’s Fire” (one of Rob’s choice cinematic nuggets of the era, lest we forget)…

The second spot pits DirecTV subscriber Rob Lowe against pot-bellied, wart-faced, snaggle-toothed comb-over bald “Far Less Attractive Rob Lowe”. The latter’s commitment to staying with cable is mirrored by his repulsive body literally falling to pieces by the time the “Love Theme” cues up again…

Far be it from us to pick one entertainment delivery system over another, but DirecTV scores big with this uproarious one-two punch. We’re declaring that as COED, and definitely not as either Super Creepy COED nor Far Less Attractive COED.
