The murder trial of Oscar Pistorius has had South Africa watching every moment–and there have been some big twists. Now there’s some outrage quickly forming over the judge in the case saying that Pistorius can’t be found guilty of intentionally killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius can be guilty of culpable homicide, however, with everyone waiting to see if the verdict will come in hours or days. [photo: Getty Images]
Judge Thokozile Masipa said that the state can’t prove an intent to kill, since Pistorius couldn’t have known that he was shooting at Reeva Steenkamp. That’s an interesting take–and it’s enough to get Pistorious free of any murder charges. At least the other charges still carry stiff penalties. We also know that Judge Masipa has already said that Pistorius was acting unlawfully when he shot through the door.
This story will soon have a conclusion for South Africa and the rest of the world. The verdict can still cause some serious trouble, though. Women’s groups are already protesting outside the courthouse… [photo: Charlie Shoemaker/Getty]
…and it’s possible that Pistorius can go free if the judge decides that the guy had any reasonable fear for his life. It sounds unlikely, but there is still plenty that needs to happen before this case is fully closed.
