David Letterman Paid Tribute To Joan Rivers Last Night [VIDEOS]

David Letterman gave his Late Show tribute to the late Joan Rivers last night, and it was really touching–especially since Letterman and Rivers both began to break out big in the ’70s. That’s also kind of interesting, since Joan was really part of a generation of comics that preceded Letterman. It’s just that Joan came from a generation that was a little afraid of female comics. Phyllis Diller had broken out big, but Joan was only brought onto talk shows as a female humorist. She’d sit on the panel, but it took a while before Joan Rivers was allowed to take the spotlight as a standup.
Anyway, David Letterman’s obviously the only existing talk show host to have really personal memories of Joan Rivers. It was the late-night tribute to watch out for, and Letterman did a great job. Don’t get weirded out by Dave using notes, either. There was a lot to remember…

…and here’s probably Joan’s last appearances on The Late Show, where she got David Letterman to walk off his own show. That was nice–and a reminder of why talk show hosts always loved Joan as a guest, because it required absolutely no work on their part….
