"Weird Al" Yankovic Has Officially Landed His First #1 Album [VIDEOS]

The results are in, and “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Mandatory Fun beat out Jason Mraz (and Kidz Bop) as the top selling album in country earning the coveted#1 spot on the Billboard 200 this week.
The musical comedian’s 14th album sold over 104,700 copies in its debut week. There was a ton of speculation about which album would top the other, but Al’s officially landed his first #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart in his 35-year career. That easily beats his personal chart-topping record of ninth place with the 2011 release of Alpocalypse. 
It’s taken Al a mere 35 years and 14 albums to release a #1-selling record. He got his fist big break in music when he was just a teenager in high school from legendary radio DJ and music historian Dr. Demento. The syndicated radio music show featured weird and silly songs, and Al sent the deejay a tape of original songs with “School Cafeteria” and “Belvedere Cruising,”–the latter a ditty about his family’s car backed by Al’s accordion. The song became a big hit among the show’s listeners and Barry “Dr. Demento” Hansen encouraged the young musician to send more and pursue his talent for making music.
It wasn’t until college when he started doing direct parodies of pop songs–starting with “My Bologna,” a parody of The Knack’s “My Sharona” that he recorded in a men’s bathroom on the San Luis Obispo campus because he didn’t have a traditional studio and the acoustics were perfect for it. It came out as a single on Capitol Records, and earned him some modest success along with his follow up to Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust” called “Another One Rides The Bus.” The studios, however, never perceived Al to be more than a passing act with a quick gimmick…

Of course, that all changed when Michael Jackson himself gave Al permission to turn his classic Thriller album hit “Beat It” into a pop song about food called “Eat It” in 1984. It topped out at Number 12 on the Billboard singles charts and turned the accordion player into a virtual pop star almost overnight.
That led to a 30-plus year recording contract with RCA, with subsequent hits such as his Devo-inspired original “Dare to Be Stupid,” another Michael Jackson parody of “Bad” called “Fat,” a satiric Nirvana parody of their most famous hit that Al called “Smells Like Nirvana,” and a chart-topping parody of Chamillionaire’s fast rapping “Ridin’ Dirty” called “White & Nerdy.” That last one actually outsold the original song, and it’s likely that Weird Al will keep enjoying a career on the charts that outlasts plenty of his original targets.
