It’s obvious that University of Texas athletic director Steve Patterson isn’t a fan of college players trying to form a union. He told ESPN.com that he doesn’t support paying athletes and doesn’t understand the recent plans from some Northwestern players to unionize. In fact, he’s claiming that the “whole thing smells of guys in the legal profession looking for a fee.”
Texas has the largest budget in the country, and probably has the ability (unlike some schools) to take care of their athletes if something happens without paying them. Patterson is under the impression that it is all about the lawyers looking to make some money. That could be the case, but it’s also obvious that some college players want more than just a scholarship. The world of college athletics is definitely changing, and Patterson doesn’t like the sound of that.
