It appears that the worst fears of Craig Ferguson fans are being confirmed now that news surfaced that E!’s late night host Chelsea Handler is talking with CBS executives about taking over the spot after what will be Stephen Colbert’s Late Show.
At this point, things seem to be falling into place for the soon-to-be-ex-host of Chelsea Lately. She’s already said that she won’t try to renew her contract with the cable channel when it runs out later this year. A report surfaced that she was in talks with CBS for some kind of show deal and those talks have moved to taking over the 12:30 a.m. slot after The Late Show. Earlier today, she posted a photo on her Twitter feed joking about a “business meeting” while she’s currently on her Uganda Be Kidding Me tour to promote her new book. It prominently features some kind of document with the CBS “eye” logo on the cover. CBS, however, flatly denied any hijinks between Handler and the network, even though there is ample evidence to suggest otherwise. Did Iraq’s former information minister get a new job with CBS after the war?
Nothing is finalized but it’s not looking good for ol’ Craig. Sure, he and his robot skeleton sidekick Geoff Petersen carved a cult audience out of late night with his Late Late Show but CBS wants the kind of ratings that can make the other networks cry and he no longer has Letterman in his corner to negotiate for him. Now might be the time to start saying our goodbyes to Craig, Geoff and Secretariat while we still have the chance.
