The boys at Rifftrax are turning their talent for talking back to the screen towards two things that have been begging for a verbal beating for quite sometime: nature documentaries and the horrid big screen remake of Super Mario Bros.
Rifftrax stars Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy just released a track of their running commentary for the Super Mario Bros. movie starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as the famed Italian stereotypes. This legendary box office bomb released in 1993 was among the first of the video game remake movies, which makes this particular failed flick a bit of a painful pioneer in cinema that sucks.
The movie famously ignored the world that the classic NES game created in favor of a dystopian dimension story in which the evil Koopa, played by the late Dennis Hopper, is trying to retrieve a special rock that can magically merge the Mushroom Kingdom with the real world and it’s up to the Mario brothers to stop him. In other words, it’s been begging for a beating for some time now.

Then on April 1st, the National Geographic Channel will feature the Rifftrax trio for a marathon of mocked nature films dubbed Total Riff Off. The boys will return to their MST3K roots and mock a series of nature films, industrial shorts and educational movies as part of a day long block of programming. Basically, they’ll be doing the thing you wish you could do during your high school biology class without getting your ear torn off by some underpaid educator with a God complex.
