The pedestrian slaughtering greatness of the classic racing video game Carmageddon comes back to life this month with an early release of the new title Carmageddon: Reincarnation.
Stainless Games, the British studio that created the controversial racing game in the 1990s, will release an early version of their revival of the brutal, open world racing game on Steam on March 27th. It also scheduled to be released as a digital download game on the PS4 and Xbox One but a release date for the home console version hasn’t been set yet. The game franchise started to breathe new life in 2012 thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $625,000 for a sequel. They announced the early release date by also releasing a new trailer with brand spanking new footage of the bloody game in action.

Those of you who didn’t grow up during the gaming boom of the 90s or never had the privilege of playing this game that your parents didn’t want you to have are in for a treat. It’s basically a re-imagining of the movie Death Race 2000 in which a group of rally racers travel from checkpoint to checkpoint racking up points by running over pedestrians with their cars but on a much grander, grislier and goofier scale. The game achieved quite an interesting reputation by embracing such blatant violence in a video game and was partially censored and even banned in countries like Germany and the UK. In fact, knowing that adults didn’t want kids or teenagers to play it is part of what made it fun to play. If Stainless could somehow convince our parents to get mad that it’s back, they might be able to perfectly recreate exactly what it was like to play the original game.
