Want something unexpected in an American Express ad? Here’s some old-fashioned racism–and it practically rushes to make it into the commercial towards the end.
In a supposed tribute to the movie Major League, this ad for American Express seems to come straight out of the 1930s, where black face was the norm and not complete racism. The commercial starts off safe enough, with a baseball team talking to the camera. The players claim that they have not won a pennant in over 30 years. It then continues on in a very deadpan manner, until the black-face player literally slides into frame with his American Express card.
Maybe we’re being sensitive but this seems like a disaster for American Express. Perhaps most of the world has not signed onto the Political Correctness of the United States because if you go down to our southern neighbors of Mexico, you’ll find out that Warner Brothers still sells its old racist Bugs Bunny cartoons to the Mexican market. We’ll be interested to see what American Express’ PR team is going to have to say once this video goes fully viral.
