The Super Bowl is just around the corner. That means everyone going to Super Bowl parties who haven’t kept up with football this season have less a week to cram as much sports knowledge into their brains as possible. That is, of course, unless they don’t mind looking stupid if some joker asks them what they think about Tor Johnson’s rushing yards this season, or if coach Fred Rogers should have been excluded from the game for tapping the other team’s phones.
USA Today’s Sports section (owing a debt to Jimmy Kimmel) decided to test the waters of the public’s Super Bowl knowledge before they start scarfing down their weight in cheese dipped chicken wings and see just how closely they’ve been paying attention to the game and the teams. They sent a reporter to hit the streets of New York City and ask people their opinion on their upcoming game. However, instead of asking them what they thought of the criticism leveled at Peyton Manning leading up to the Super Bowl or Richard Sherman’s post-game rant, they threw out a bunch of fake names and stories just to see if they were paying attention.

It’s astounding the things that some people will say or do for attention, even if they don’t know anything about the subjects they are talking about. I suppose it’s natural to want to fit in but it’s such an easy trap to fall into if you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about. Now that we know that, we can all pull our own “Savage Johnson” trick on someone during the game on Sunday.
