Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor entered the boxing ring for a shot at undefeated Floyd Mayweather in August 2017. Ultimately, it was Mayweather who kept his unbeaten streak alive by scoring a 10th round knockout win over the brash Irishman.
But while Mayweather got the best of McGregor, the mixed martial artist is open to another shot at victory.
In fact, McGregor recently shared his desire to have a rematch with Mayweather under boxing rules.
“I would like to rematch him under boxing rules, again,” McGregor said during an interview on the Tony Robbins Podcast. “And I believe I would win. Actually, there I go again with that fake humbleness. I know I would win. When I went into the fight in the early rounds I was whooping him in the early rounds. I went back to my corner after the first round and I said, ‘This is easy!’
“He never fought like that in his entire career, but he was forced to fight that way because he was getting beaten. The approach caught me off guard. I was not prepared for it, I was not used to it…and he walked me down and ended up getting the stoppage.”
McGregor’s recollection of the bout appears to stray from reality, but there is no doubt Mayweather coming out of retirement for a rematch with the MMA star would put up big numbers on pay-per-view. Those who watched the bout understood that Mayweather was lulling McGregor into a false sense of security before turning up the pressure.
Whether McGregor would be able to live up to the strong words in his interview remains to be seen.
