Born in Miami to Cuban parents, Mendes was primarily raised in Los Angeles, California, and attended Hoover High School in Glendale.

Mendes first professional acting role came in the 1998 direct-to-video horror film Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror.
In the year 2001, Mendes broke through to the mainstream when she was cast in the award-winning film Training Day alongside Denzel Washington.

After that successful run of films, Mendes’ career began to take a downturn, as she starred in a handful of flops such as The Women, The Spirit, Cleaner, and The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.
In 2010, Mendes featured in Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg comedy The Other Guys and in 2012 she starred in The Place Beyond the Pines. Other than those films, her only acting appearance since 2012 was in the 2014 film Lost River, which was directed by her partner Ryan Gosling.
