Jessica Rothe, born in Denver, Colorado, is an American actress who is best known for her starring role in 2017 the slasher comedy film Happy Death Day.
Rothe was actually born Jessica Rothenberg to Susan and Steve Rothenberg on May 28, 1987.
She began to take an interest in the performing arts at an early age, as she started ballet classes when she was just eight-years-old and attended theater camps in Kansas City during her summer vacations.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the prestigious Boston University in 2009, Rothe launched an acting career that began with her appearance in a 2010 episode of television series America’s Most Wanted: America Fights Back.
After appearances in episodes of TV series such as The Onion News Network, Happy Endings, Gossip Girl, Blue Bloods, High Maintenance, and Chicago P.D., Rothe got her first big break when she began starring as Paige in the MTV series Mary + Jane in 2016.
Also in 2016, Rothe appeared as Alexis in the romantic musical La La Land alongside Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. La La Land went on to be nominated for 14 Academy Awards, which is tied for the most Oscar nominations of all-time.
In 2017, Rothe’s career took another step forward when she starred in the horror comedy slasher movie Happy Death Day, which made an impressive $125.5 million at the box office despite being made for just $4.5 million.
Not only was Happy Death Day financially viable, but it was critically successful, as it currently holds a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a very solid score for a modern day horror comedy.
Given the overwhelming success of the original, a sequel — Happy Death Day 2U — was greenlit and eventually released on February 13, 2019.
