Police confirm one person was taken to the hospital following a shooting at Butler High School in Matthews, NC. The extent of the victim’s injuries is unknown and the shooter is in custody.
At this time, Butler High School is not dismissing students to Elevation Church for pick up. The school is still on lockdown and law enforcement is on site. Officials will update families through the Connect-5 call system and social media with any other updates.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district released the following statement about the shooting:
Butler High School is on lockdown after a student was shot on campus this morning. The single shooter has been apprehended and the weapon is in the possession of law enforcement. Law enforcement has advised that there is no further immediate danger at this time and the initial investigation shows this to be an isolated incident.
The victim has been transported for medical attention. Butler High School families are being advised through phone calls. Law enforcement officers have secured the camps and an investigation by law enforcement continues. No persons will be allowed onto the Butler High School campus until the lockdown has been lifted by law enforcement.
The reports of a shooting at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina — located about 22 miles southeast of Charlotte — is just the latest in a string of evacuations, lockdowns, bomb threats, and shootings that have plagued the United States.
Over the course of the past few years, shootings and lockdowns such as these have been a scourge upon the country and people have struggled with coming up with a solution. Lockdowns have become all too common as a means of protection when students and faculty are in danger and today is no different.
This incident follows similar incidents at Dodd Middle School in Connecticut, Windham Public Schools also in Connecticut, Pacoima Middle School in Los Angeles, Millennium Middle School in Florida, and US Grant High School in Oklahoma, which are just some of the places where events such as this have occurred.
