Ruby Rose, who starred as Stella Carlin in the Netflix hit series Orange Is the New Black, is adding a new role to her always expanding filmography. It was announced that Rose has been tapped to play Batwoman in The CW’s upcoming superhero series. In the series written by Caroline Dries, Batwoman will be an out lesbian. She will be the first lesbian superhero to headline her own show or movie.
The 32-year-old Rose came out as a lesbian at the age of 12. Because of her sexuality, she was driven to a suicide attempt due to verbal taunts and physical abuse from her classmates in school. Rose has since opened up about being genderfluid.
The message that I sort of wanted to explain to my fans was why I dress the way I dress, or why I am the way I am. Because I still was getting those questions of, you know, ‘why does she look like a boy?’ ‘she could be so pretty if only she had longer hair and wore more make up and wore a dress,'” Rose said, via Teen Vogue. “It’s a bit more complicated than that. I knew the world was starting to talk about transgender and gender as a whole, so the fact that it’s even gotten 25 million views, that’s wild.”
