Tyler Mitchell burst onto the photography scene in 2018, being named the Artsy Breakout Artist of the Year. Now, he is generating even more attention and trending nationwide on Twitter after shooting an iconic photoshoot of Beyonce for the September issue cover of Vogue.
Beyonce allegedly handpicked Mitchell to shoot the cover for the magazine, making him the first black photographer to shoot Vogue’s cover in their 126-year history.
Mitchell is just 23 years old, also making him one of the youngest photographers to ever shoot the cover of Vogue.
While many would expect an A-list celebrity like Beyonce to be protective and demand some artistic control of a photoshoot, Mitchell said she was very open-minded and allowed him to make his vision become a reality.
“When she sat down for me there was immediately the kind of comfort level you’d have with a friend, which was quite unexpected,” he told Vogue. “You’d imagine someone as famous as Beyoncé to be protective of her image, but she was really an open book—and that’s exactly what you want as a photographer.
“It’s funny because I’m pretty sure she headlined the first concert I ever went to, when I was maybe eight or nine, so you could say we met in a past life.”
