Randa Markos is currently the No. 12-ranked women’s strawweight contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The Iraqi-born mixed martial artist first got her start in the UFC after joining season 20 of the long-running reality series The Ultimate Fighter, also known as The Ultimate Fighter: A Champion Will Be Crowned. The season introduced the strawweight division to the UFC and crowned the inaugural champion, Carla Esparza.
Markos entered the season as a relative unknown and served as the No. 14 seed in the tournament.
However, she quickly made a name for herself after defeating one of the season’s early favorites, Tecia Torres, in the elimination round. Markos continued her impressive run by scoring a first-round submission victory over Felice Herrig in the quarterfinals via scarf-hold armlock. She would ultimately fall in the semifinals to current champion Rose Namajunas.
ince joining the UFC officially in Dec. 2014, Markos has alternated wins and losses and currently holds an 8-5 overall record. She has wins over Aisling Daly, Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger, Juliana Lima, and former champ Carla Esparza.
Up next for Markos is a meeting with Nina Ansaroff at UFC on FOX 30 in Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on Saturday, July 28.
