One man and woman have been injured in an explosion near the Varby Gard metro station in Stockholm, Sweden.
According to police, the man endured fatal injuries after picking up something off the ground that ended up detonating. The man and woman were together and are believed to be a couple.
The nature of the device is currently unknown, although police have denied that it had been a hand grenade. A bomb disposal squad is checking the station area. Police are also checking for additional explosive devices.
At this time, police do not believe the incident was terror-related. In addition, while it had been speculated that the explosion could have been an attempted murder, police do not believe that the couple was targeted directly.
Update: According to The Independent, Sven-Erik Olsson, a spokesman for Stockholm police, has released the following statement:
“The man was seriously hurt injured after he picked up something from the ground and this device exploded.”
According to Express, Lars-Ake Stevelind, a spokesman for the Stockholm fire department spokesman, said in a statement with Sveriges Radio:
“Someone has used explosives. We do not know more than that.”
