Hurricane Irma may move northward over the Caribbean into the continental United States this weekend, and as a result, Irma may mow through South Florida. Rick Scott, the governor of Florida, declared a state of emergency and urged people in areas that may be hit by the hurricane to leave ahead of Irma for your own safety.
The Florida Keys is under mandatory evacuation orders beginning on Wednesday.
Bay Area counties have also been monitoring the storm, and have announced total school closures across several counties. Hurricane Irma 2017: Full List Of School Closings
Hillsborough: All public schools in Hillsborough County will be closed on Thursday and Friday in anticipation of Irma.
Pinellas: All public schools in Pinellas County will also be closed on Thursday and Friday.
Polk: All public schools in Polk County will be closed on Friday.
Hernando: All public school in Hernando County will be closed on Thursday and Friday.
Pasco: All public schools in Pasco County will be closed on Friday.
Manatee: All public schools in Manatee County will also be closed on Friday.
Sarasota: All public schools in Sarasota County will be closed on Friday.
Monroe: All public schools, government offices and county parks in Monroe County have been closed as of Wednesday, September 6.
Basilica School of St. Mary Star of the Sea: This school in Key West will be closed from Wednesday, Sept. 6, through Monday, Sept. 11.
Miami-Dade and Broward Counties: The Archdiocese of Miami sent out a statement, saying that all of its elementary and high schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties will be closed from Thursday, Sept. 7 and Friday, Sept. 8.
Miami County Day School: This school will be closed from Wednesday until the end of the week.
The University of Miami: This university has cancelled all of its classes from Wednesday until the end of the week.
Saint Thomas University: This school will be closed down starting this Thursday.
Ransom Everglades: This school will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Scheck Hillel Community School: This school will also be closed on Thursday and Friday.
Gulliver School: This school is set to close its doors on Thursday and Friday.
Barry University: Starting at 4 P.M. on Thursday, all campuses in Florida and the Caribbean will be closed.
Florida International University: This university will be closed down on Thursday, Sept. 7. The football game planned for Saturday has been cancelled.
Citrus: This county has yet to make an official decision.
Sumter: This county has yet to make an official decision.
Hardee: This county has yet to make an official decision.
Highlands: This county has yet to make an official decision.
Desota: This county has yet to make an official decision.
As Floridians cleared supermarkets of bottled water and emptied gas pumps, people in the northeastern Caribbean were making last minute-preparations before powerful Hurricane Irma hit their islands. Late Tuesday, the massive Category 5 storm was almost upon islands like Antigua and Barbuda with near-record 185 mph sustained winds. In its 11 p.m. ET advisory, the US National Hurricane Center said the eye of the hurricane was 50 miles from the two islands. Source: CNN
