Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is officially out in theaters. Nerds may take a moment to rejoice while Disney executives may take a moment to swim in their money Scrooge McDuck style. Vol. 2 is arguably one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most anticipated sequels thanks to the surprise success of the first film.
The original Guardians hit theaters in 2014 and, if we’re being honest, none of us had any clue who the likes Peter Quill, Rocket Raccoon and Groot were. But that didn’t matter in the slightest as Guardians rode a wave of glowing reviews to a shocking $773.3 million worldwide. Many consider the film to be one of the best and most original in the occasionally flavorless MCU.
Vol. 2 brings back the original main cast – Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper – while adding a few new faces such as Kurt Russell and Pom Klementieff. Fans are excited to receive answers to the mystery surrounding Star Lord’s parentage and how, if at all, Vol. 2 will lead into Avengers: Infinity War.
Marvel has had some uneven success with its second-part sequels over the years. Captain America: The Winter soldier has a strong case as the MCU’s finest entry, but Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World left quite a lot to be desired. By that I mean I wish I could use the Infinity Stones to wipe them from my memory.
Hopefully, Vol. 2 has more in common with the Captain America franchise (Civil War was also a damn good time) and builds on its breakout first chapter with a quality follow up.
