I just got back from my first trip to the world-famous Daytona International Speedway and despite the fact that I’ve heard nothing but great things about the place, it’s the type of environment you need to see to believe. You truly cannot understand the size and scale of the place until you see it.
Even though the real races don’t really get jumping until tomorrow, Daytona on a Friday is still more exciting than most sporting events on their best days.
I went into the day not expecting to see many people. “It’s Friday,” I figured. “The race isn’t until Sunday.” Well, like I am most times in my life, I was dead wrong. Even two days before The Great American Race, the place is packed to the brim. I arrived at around 1:00 P.M. and the infield was already jam packed. From what I can tell, some people have been here for days.
Honestly, the first thing it reminded me of was tailgating in college. The atmosphere isĀ thatĀ on point. Barbecue burning, beer flowing, these people know how to have a good time.
After getting back to my hotel, all I wanted to do was get back to the track. I could see how people spend an entire week here. It’s like a little college vacation for adults. Take your shirt off, slam a couple of beers, and soak up the Florida sun for a week.
Needless to say, I cannot wait for the rest of the weekend.
