There is no post-holiday letdown in PS4 world. The January release slate is heavy with console exclusives, including the JRPG Tales of Berseria, the topsy-turvy action platformer Gravity Rush and the Japanese underworld exploration tale Yakuza 0. Those looking to play through the full slate that Hitman: Season 1 has to offer are in luck, with the full game finally getting a release date. And then there is the blockbuster that many players have been anticipating for months — Resident Evil 7 Bihozard.
Here’s a look at the new PS4 games coming out in January:
5. Tales of Berseria
Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
Developer: Bandai Namco Entertainment
Release date: January 24
The 16th entry in the long-running JRPG saga, a prequel to Tales of Zestiria. You collect souls of mystical creatures, mixing and matching them to set up the best combat teams you can muster. Expect emotional storylines, comical dialogue and intense battle sequences.
4. Gravity Rush 2
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Developer: Project Siren
Release date: January 18
The original platformer was an under-the-radar hit on the sadly underutilized PS Vita handheld. The port found similar success on the PS4, and now a full-blown sequel looks to take advantage of all the horsepower the console has to offer. You race through constantly shifting landscapes, leaping from one twisting platform to another while trying to keep your head straight as your point of view shifts sideways, upside down and back again.
3. Yakuza 0
Release date: January 24
A deep dive into the dark recesses of the Japanese mob, this prequel journeys back to the era before the mainline games began. Set in 1988, the narrative shifts back and forth between two Yakuza leaders from different districts to investigate an incident that has implications throughout the country.
2. Hitman: The Complete First Season
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: IO Interactive
Release date: January 30
This open-ended stealth title was originally released episodically, but now has been cobbled together as a traditional release. You guide iconic Agent 47 through a series of risky takedowns, using a mix of costumes, deception and cunning to slip through hefty defenses and execute your victims without leaving any trace of evidence behind.
1. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard
Release date: January 27
Billed as a return to the series’ survival horror roots, this is the first time a game in the series places you in first-person perspective. You take control of a new character, Ethan, who seeks to find his wife by searching out a remote plantation mansion. The setting has fans of the original game giddy about a return to a haunted house-style setting.
