The Oakland Raiders’ first season was in 1960 as a member of the AFL. Thankfully, it only took them one season to realize that they should put some cheerleaders on the sidelines. The Raiderettes were formed in 1961, and they’ve been with the team ever since. From the Raiders joining the NFL in 1970, to the Raiders moving to Los Angeles in 1982, to the Raiders returning to Oakland in 1995, their cheerleaders have been a constant, vibrant presence.
There are currently 40 members on the squad, and the Raiderettes do their cheering at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum. It’s extremely tough to bring some sex appeal to that dump of a stadium, but these lovely ladies are able to do the impossible. They are billed as “Football’s Fabulous Females,” which has to be the coolest nickname for cheerleaders in the NFL.
Two of the Raiderettes’ most famous alumni are Danielle Gamba and Anjelah Johnson. Danielle is a model, and she was Playboy’s Cyber Girl of the Month for October 2004. Anjelah is a comedian and actress, and she was on the 13th season of Mad TV.
