To the victor go the spoils.

Fresh off of a dominant 2016 Indy Car campaign, Team Penske continues to improve their roster as they announced the signing of driver Josef Newgarden. Newgarden will drive the Number 2 Team Penske Chevrolet in the Verizon IndyCar Series starting in 2017.

A five-year veteran of the series, Newgarden finished a career-best fourth in the standings while driving for Ed Carpenter Racing in 2016. The Tennessee native had 11 Top 10s including a victory at the Iowa Corn 300. Newgarden will look to add to the success of Team Penske, who swept the top three spots in points last year including the IndyCar Series Champion, Simon Pagenaud.

In a statement released on Team Penske’s website,┬áteam owner Roger Penske said, “We are always looking to build toward the future and when we had the opportunity to talk with Josef, we knew that he would be a great fit to our program. He’s a fantastic driver on the track and and will be great with our partners off the track.”

Newgarden, the 2011 Indy Lights champion and an American Ninja Warrior participant, joins Team Penske after spending his whole career with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing and Ed Carpenter Racing. Newgarden calls it a dream come true.

“For any open-wheel racer – or any race car driver in general – Team Penske is a dream job. I look forward to working with all of Team Penske’s great partners,” said Newgarden.

The 2017 IndyCar Series kick off in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 12, 2017.
