Panthers vs. 49ers: Date, Kickoff Time, TV Channel & Preview

There are always plenty of interesting storylines around the San Francisco 49ers and the Carolina Panthers. There is the story of Cam Newton taking his team to the Super Bowl last season and Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem. The two teams will meet up on Sunday afternoon in Charlotte looking for another win for the 49ers while the Panthers want to bounce back from their opening week loss. Here is a look at the matchup.

The 49ers shutout the Los Angeles Rams 28-0 on Monday night so have a short week and a cross-country flight for this game. Blaine Gabbert threw for 170 yards and a touchdown while Jeremy Kerley had seven catches for 61 yards. San Francisco faced a very bad Los Angeles team in Week 1 and Carolina is a much, much better team to deal with. The defense isn’t going to be able to pull off a shutout in this game. Carlos Hyde rushed for two touchdowns for San Francisco in Week 1 and needs to be used for clock control in this one to keep Newton and company off the field.

The Panthers lost 21-20 to the Denver Broncos and will have had more than a week off when this game happens. Newton threw for 194 yards and a touchdown but also had an interception to go with that. Kelvin Benjamin returned from injury and looked great with six catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. The defense was solid against a rookie quarterback in Denver and should be even better against Gabbert, who has a very poor win-loss record over his career starting. This is a game that the Panthers need to win and should be able to if they can control Hyde on the ground.
