The Jacksonville Jaguars and San Diego Chargers go into their Week 2 matchup with chips on their shoulders from their Week 1 defeats. Jacksonville came close to winning at home against Green Bay while San Diego allowed a big lead to get away in Kansas City. This is a game that is a must-win for both teams if they want to have any hopes of making the playoffs in 2016. It may be early but it is that kind of game. Here is a look at the matchup.
The Jaguars lost 27-23 to the Green Bay Packers. Blake Bortles threw for 320 yards and a touchdown and looked the way of Allen Robinson early and often. Robinson was targeted 15 times by Bortles and finished with five catches. It is clear that Bortles wants to get the ball to Robinson all the time. If he can do that consistently, there is hope for the Jacksonville offense. The run game was terrible, with T.J. Yeldon running for just 39 yards and 21 carries even though he did score a touchdown. This game is all about the offense getting help from the running backs and attacking the San Diego secondary.
The Chargers allowed a big first half lead to get away during a 33-27 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Philip Rivers passed for 243 yards and a touchdown while allowing his run game to do most of the heavy lifting. Danny Woodhead rushed for 89 yards and caught five passes for 31 yards and a touchdown. Melvin Gordon had 57 yards rushing and two touchdowns. If the Chargers can control the clock, they can keep Bortles off the field and allow for a winning day in Southern California. If the defense can’t stop the Jaguars offense like last week, it could be another long losing day.
