The Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets will go into the 2016 season opener as two of the better teams in the AFC. Cincinnati won the AFC North last season while the Jets were one win away from making the playoffs. The two teams combined to go 22-10 in 2015 and could be expected to match that mark or even better this coming year. This is a key game for both teams as it could be the difference between making the playoffs or not with tiebreakers in December. Here is a look at the matchup.
The Bengals went 12-4 last season but lost their first playoff game yet again. Andy Dalton didn’t play in that game due to injury but is back to 100% now for the new season. A.J. Green is clearly his favorite target and with a two-headed monster at running back with Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard. Cincinnati has very high expectations on them to finally win a postseason game and not falter yet again. Can Dalton and coach Marvin Lewis get the job done? That all start with this first game on the road in a hostile environment.
The Jets just needed to win their final game of 2015 to make the playoffs but couldn’t get the job done. The team now has Matt Forte as their running back and Ryan Fitzpatrick is back under center. The defense still looks great and there is a chance that New York could win the AFC East with Tom Brady’s suspension for the Patriots. If that is going to happen, the Jets need to win games like this one to open the season and continue to win early on. Cincinnati will be a huge challenge for the Jets and one that the team sorely needed after their thud of a finish last year.
