The Netherlands women’s national volleyball team is currently competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics. This is their third Olympic appearance, and they will be looking to bring home their first-ever medal. The Netherlands finished in sixth place in 1992 and in fifth place in 1996, then they went through a 20-year stretch without making the Games.
That drought came to an end in 2016, as the Netherlands finished in second place at the 1st World Qualifier. They went 5-2 over the nine-day tournament in Japan, locking up one of the four Olympic berths.
Since the Games have gotten underway in Rio, the Netherlands have clearly proven that they belong on the biggest stage in sports. They finished in second place in Pool B with a 4-1 record, beating China, Italy, Puerto Rico, and Serbia. Their lone loss came against the USA, who would go on to win Pool B.
The Netherlands were able to advance to the eight-team quarterfinals, and they came out swinging in the knockout stage, eliminating South Korea with a 3-1 victory. Their next match will take place against China on Thursday, August 18 at 9:15 p.m. It should be a doozy, as the Netherlands beat China in a 3-2 nail-biter in their first matchup in group play.
