Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas were one of the two women beach volleyball teams that were representing Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics. This was the first time that Canada ever sent the maximum amount of women beach volleyball teams to an Olympic Games, so I’m sure Canadians everywhere were popping celebratory Molsons.
The 31-year-old Jamie and the 29-year-old Kristina both made their Olympic debuts in Rio. Although they went home empty-handed, they can definitely hold their heads up high.
In group play, they beat Marta Menegatti and Laura Giombini of Italy 2-1 and Doaa Elghobashy and Nada Meawad of Egypt 2-0. Their lone loss in group play was a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany.
Their 2-1 record was good enough for second place in Pool D and a spot in the round of 16. Unfortunately for Jamie and Kristina, their run ended in the round of 16 after they were eliminated 2-0 by fellow countrywomen Heather Bansley and Sarah Pavan.
