The Russian women’s Olympic volleyball team will be looking for their 10th medal in Rio. Russia has historically been a powerhouse in women’s indoor volleyball, as they hold the records for the most total medals (9), gold medals (4), and silver medals (5). But they have cooled off in recent years, finishing tied for fifth place in both 2008 and 2012.
Russia’s most recent Olympic medal came in 2004 when they won silver in Athens, and their last gold medal was won at the 2015 European Championship. To punch their ticket to Rio, Russia won the European Qualifier. They went undefeated over the six-day tournament, winning all five of their matches.
