Madelein Meppelink and Marleen van Iersel are one of two teams that are representing the Netherlands at the 2016 Olympics in beach volleyball. This is their first Olympic appearance together, but they’ve both previously competed at the 2012 Games.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Madelein and her partner Sophie van Gestel were eliminated in the round of 16 by the eventual bronze medal winners Juliana Felisberta and Larissa França of Brazil. Marleen and Sanne Keizer suffered a similar fate, losing to the eventual gold medal winners Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings of the U.S. in the round of 16.
The 26-year-old Madelein and the 28-year-old Marleen were the sixth seeded team coming into the 2016 Olympics, and they got off to a great start in Pool F. They defeated Norisbeth Agudo and Olaya Pérez Pazo of Venezuela 2-0 on Saturday, August 6. Their next match will take place on Monday, August 8 at 4:30 p.m. against Nathalia Alfaro and Karen Cope of Costa Rica.
