Several Golfers are Bailing on the Olympics in Fear of Zika Virus

The Rio Olympics is a little over a month away and there have already been many athletes who have opted out of participating in this years event. Multiple reasons were provided by athletes for not wanting to represent their country in this years Olympics, but for these guys there’s only one: the Zika Virus (a disease primarily transmitted by mosquitoes). All of the golfers also had very similar explanations when stating that the only thing stopping them is their families or their plan to start one.

According to Newsday, Charl Shwartzel, a South African Golfer claimed “If I didn’t want to have children, or if I was single, I’d play”. Along with Brendan Grace who also stated, “we are getting married in November and hoping to start a family in the near future, so I must put the health of my family first”. Both are very valid excuses.

This disease must be serious if it’s preventing people from taking part in an opportunity of a lifetime. But then again, Golf is just one of the many  irrelevant Olympic sports, so the risk is for sure greater than the reward.

Here’s a list of the athletes who have decided to skip this years Summer Olympics:

Jason Day, Australia
Shane Lowry, Ireland
Brenden Grace, South Africa
Rory Mcllroy, Ireland or Great Britain
Mark Leishman, Australia
Charl Schwartzel, South Africa

I’m not really into golf, but I know there are a couple big names on this list. The only name I can match a face to is Rory Mcllroy. And that’s only because he has a Nike commercial with Tiger Woods that I watch every morning for motivation. But I’m sure some of you golf fanatics are finding this a bit upsetting.
