Why Is Roger Federer Not Playing In the French Open?

Roger Federer just announced that he has dropped out of the French Open (aka the Roland-Garros), a tennis tournament where he’s reached a great amount of success. Sadly, the 34-year-old superstar has yet to recover from an injured back that he hurt during the Madrid Open.
This will be the first Grand Slam Tournament that Federer has missed this century…
“I have been making steady progress, but I am still not 100%. I feel I might be taking an unnecessary risk by playing in [the French Open] before I am really ready. This decision was not easy to make, but I took it to ensure I could play the remainder of the season and help to extend the rest of my career.”
The truth is that Federer is coming to the end of his reign over the sport. His game isn’t as well-suited for clay as someone like Rafael Nadal, who has DOMINATED the French Open for nearly 11 years. Playing at the high level of Grand Slam when you know that you don’t have a good chance of winning would be unwise for someone who’s approaching the end of their career.
