Today is Groundhog Day, that useless holiday made famous by the hilarious Bill Murray movie of the same name. For those of you who don’t quite know what Groundhog Day is, it’s a tradition celebrated in a couple of places–the biggest of which is in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club actually established it as an event every year, and they claim that there’s only ever been one “Punxsutawney Phil” ever.
As part of the tradition, on February 2nd “officials” stand outside of a groundhog’s nest in a tree (I know, I thought they lived in holes). If it’s cloudy that day, then folklore states that Spring will come early. If it’s sunny and the groundhog “sees its own shadow” then he’ll retreat back to his home and let us know that Winter will last for six more weeks.
