If you’re into comic book adaptations, 2016 will be your favorite year ever at the movies. Characters ranging from the legendary (Batman and Superman; Captain America; The X-Men) to those beloved by geeks (Deadpool; The Suicide Squad) to obscure (Gambit, Dr. Strange) are all getting new movies this year. To add to that gold rush of geekery, there are new entries in both Star Trek and Star Wars due out in the same year — something that’s hasn’t happened since 2002. Original ideas are hard to come by this year, but there are some fresh ideas, including Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and the Coen brothers’ Hail, Caesar!
While you’re perusing this list, keep in mind that this is more a measure of excitement than a prediction about how popular or good the movies will actually be. It’s always entertaining to look back on previous years’ lists to see how spot-on or way off we were. See below to see how we did the past several years.
Since a 30-film list is nowhere near enough space to cover the entire slate of films due out next year, we’ve also given some nods to movies that didn’t quite make the cut with honorable mentions, as well as shamed some of the movies we’re terrified of with dishonorable mentions.
But without further distraction, here are the 30 movies that we’re most anticipating in 2016.
The Purge 2
London Has Fallen
The Nice Guys
Ride Along 2
Kung Fu Panda 3
The Secret Life of Pets
Kubo and the 2 Strings
