‘The Interview’ Has Already Made a Cool Million And Sony’s Damn Grateful

The Interview $1 Million

The Interview opened in movie theaters on Christmas Day–and it’s the first time that you’ll ever see a movie studio getting really excited over a major motion picture making $1 million at the box office on a holiday. After all, The Interview only opened in 331 brave indie theaters supported by brave moviegoers. [photo: Marcus Ingram/Getty]

Some of us just watched the comedy on Youtube, of course–which kept us from being arrested after checking out the Korean Party Girls of The Interview. Rory Bruer is the President of Worldwide Distribution for Sony, though, and he had a special message for people who hit the theaters on a hit list…

Considering the incredibly challenging circumstances, we are extremely grateful to the people all over the country who came out to experience The Interview on the first day of its unconventional release. The audience reaction was fantastic–the limited release, in under 10% of the amount of theaters originally planned, featured numerous sell-outs and a first-day gross over $1 million.

So thanks for all that, Americans. Of course, The Interview still finished in 15th place for Christmas Day. That’s not good news for Sony. We’re still happy to see a kind-of-happy ending here. That photo above, incidentally, is from The Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia. The last movie we saw there was part of a rock ‘n roll horror show earlier this year. We needed more security then.
