Linda Cardellini on “New Girl” [SEE HER TONIGHT]

See Her Tonight

Linda Cardellini on New Girl

(9:00 pm EST, FOX)

It’s kind of a shock for your See Her Tonight column to see how Linda Cardellini is getting older–so it’s also been a big relief to see the former Freaks and Geeks goddess getting wild on New Girl. That’s courtesy of this current story arc with Linda as the wild sister of Zooey Deschanel’s character. It’s the rare case where, “Does she have a sister?” should really be, “Does she have a sister who deserves her own television show?”

Of course, New Girl has given us new gals like Erin Johnson and June Diane Raphael in the past.  Linda Cardellini is a show-biz veteran by comparison. If you weren’t old enough to be part of the Freaks and Geeks cult (that being the show which gave us young James Franco, Jason Segel, and Seth Rogen), then you might have fallen in love with Linda over her work as Velma Dinkley in the two big-screen Scooby-Doo movies. That performance really fast-forwarded a few kids into puberty, with Linda filling out Velma’s sweater nicely enough that the later porn parody was kind of redundant. See for yourself…

But, as noted, Linda is getting older now. Her early stardom didn’t translate to the big screen after the Scooby-Doo years, even though she gave one of the best performances in 2005’s Brokeback Mountain. She also bravely gave her all the next year in the underseen stoner comedy Grandma’s Boy. She was also staying busy on the small screen as a nurse keeping the medical drama ER interesting in its final years.

Linda managed to surprise everyone last year with a nicely repressed (and ultimately sexy) turn on Mad Men. Now she’s set to star in an upcoming Netflix series that’ll hopefully remind people that Linda’s aging into a real sex bomb–although you can check out these pics and agree that Linda’s been putting on a great display for several years…
