Top Dawg Entertainment–the Compton conglomerate that turned Kendrick Lamar into a household name–has delivered “Cilvia Demo” as the first official release by novice MC Isaiah Rashad. Isaiah is up there with the soulful SZA as part of TDE’s young blood division, just beneath the label’s figureheads in Black Hippy–though we’ll see how much longer that lasts.

The tune’s title is inspired by Isaiah’s old beater, as he recently explained to MTV News: “Cilvia was “the car that broke down on me like three or four months before I got signed, on a f*cking mountain. A lot of sh*t happened in that car, a lot of stupid sh*t.”

Stylistically, Isaiah stands apart from the Top Dawg roster by exploring the introspective and thoughtful rhymes that Kendrick occasionally flirts with in between bouts of angry spitfire and soulful hook. By way of touching on themes like his relationship–or lack thereof–with his father, Isaiah breaks down the wall between artist and audience. In the process, he’s acknowledging his debt to rap icons of the 90’s while humanizing the very idea of a rap star.

What’s more, 2014 is shaping up to be quite a year for Isaiah and TDE: it was announced today that Rashad will be joining Schoolboy Q as the official support for the Oxymoron Tour–named after Schoolboy’s upcoming major label debut on February 25th. Check out “Cilvia Demo” below…
